Learn about the wonderful Cuban instrument “el tres”, with my new book, “El Tres Cubano”. Not just for treseros (tres players), all musicians interested in understanding Cuban music should buy this book, especially as it relates to traditional styles.
One of the strong points of this method is the emphasis on not only the notes that are played, but the context in which they are played. I firmly believe that to truly understand Cuban music, you must understand the context. That is why I have included full ensemble examples and an introduction to Cuban music styles.
Although this instrument resembles a three-string guitar, you will find out why it is different. It is really a rhythmic instrument, and generally is not strummed the way a standard guitar is played. It is also tuned slightly different and this, combined with the physical design, makes certain patterns and techniques possible.
El Tres Cubano covers:
- Cuban music styles such as, Changüi, Nengon, Kiriba, Sucu Sucu, Punto as well as more know forms like Son, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha and Guajira.
- Tuning
- Scales
- Chord forms
- “Montuno” patterns
- Ensemble examples
- The importance of Clave
- Construction of the Tres Cubano
- Suggested Listening
- and more
